Grottaglie, Taranto, Puglia
A family-run workshop that continues tradition
Grottaglie is a town in the province of Taranto in Puglia.
Due to the abundance of clay, pottery has developed as an important industry in the town since before Christ. It reached its peak in the 15th century, with products being exported as far away as Turkey. The town's pottery is the only one in the region to have been awarded the " DOC " (Certification of Origin) and is protected by the EU . The town's name comes from the caves (grotta in Italian), and many caves remain today. People began to live in the town's caves in the 10th century, and later a castle was built in the 14th century, and the city walls in the 15th century.
It is a family-run workshop that is one of the oldest and most prestigious artisan workshops in Grottaglie.
Passed down from father to son, its origins are recorded to date back to the mid- 1500s AD.
Even today, they continue to produce pottery with classic designs, mainly featuring Grottaglie's signature chicken patterns and olive paint, using the same skilled techniques.
