Vietri on Mare

History of Vietri Pottery

Vietri sul Mare is a beautiful town called a little jewel in Salerno, Campania, Italy. Since 1997, the Amalfi Coast from Vietri sul Mare to Positano has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Vietri sul Mare is characterized by its colorful landscape lined with pottery workshops.

The crystal clear blue of the sea, the peaceful green of the forest, and the yellow of sun-kissed lemons.

These colours are synonymous with Vietri sul Mare and the colourful pottery produced here has made the town famous all over the world.

The pottery industry took root in the city during the late Renaissance and has remained a symbol of the city ever since.

Scholars say that Vietri pottery dates back to the time of the Etruscans in the 5th century BC and flourished in the early 13th century.

Already in the 16th century, they were producing wall and floor tiles, kitchen utensils, household items, as well as jars for storing spices and holy water bowls.

In the 1930s, when the persecution of Jews began in Germany, many artists moved to the coast of Vietri, where they could share their skills and live a peaceful life.

This has given new impetus and a variety of styles to Vietri's ancient crafts, influencing contemporary works as well.

A tradition that continues

The pieces that are made here are inspired by everyday life: boats, fishermen, sellers with loads on their heads, women with small children, etc. Today, there are also panoramas of the Amalfi Coast, lemons that evoke Sorrento, marine decorations, animals and baroque motifs.

The many masters of Vietri sul Mare pass on not only their skills but also their love and passion to their families, preserving the traditions.

In 2023, Splende became a Goodwill Ambassador for the City of Vietri.

We hope to continue spreading the word about the wonderful town of Vietri sul Mare, and not just about our pottery, so that many people will get to know the town and visit.
